Many Asian/South Asian marriages are longer, elaborate affairs that often amount many days. They are usually filled with a whole lot of tradition and culture, which usually stems from the truth that marriage is not only about becoming a member of two persons together but also the blending of families. Although many couples today choose to go a lot more Western course by incorporating some of these traditions or perhaps ditching them completely, you can still find some who want to stick with these types of traditional traditions and remember their marriage ceremony the way they’ve already always done.

Friends are then encouraged to have the newlyweds a round of applause (yam seng) at the end of the dinner as being a show of gratitude for pleasant them to their household.
